Index Domini 400 Social Index

Principles About the Index

KLD's Domini 400 SocialSM Index (DS 400) is a float-adjusted market capitalization weighted common stock index modeled on the S&P 500 Index.  The DS 400 is the first benchmark for equity portfolios subject to multiple environmental and social screens. It is a widely recognized benchmark for measuring the impact of social screening on financial returns and the performance of socially screened portfolios.

Index Construction

The DS 400's core universe is the S&P 500, an index of large-cap companies covering over 80% of the U.S. equity market.  Companies not in the S&P 500 are also eligible for inclusion on the DS 400.

Companies involved beyond specific thresholds in adult entertainment, alcohol, tobacco, firearms, gambling, nuclear power and military weapons are not eligible for the DS 400.

KLD selects companies for the DS 400 that have positive environmental, social and governance (ESG) records based on analysis of the following issues: community relations, diversity, employee relations, human rights, and product quality and safety, environment and corporate governance.  KLD evaluates companies in the context of their industry and sector as well as in relation to the broader market.

In selecting companies for the DS 400, KLD seeks to maintain the composition of Index holdings at approximately 250 S&P companies, 100 non-S&P companies chosen for sector diversification and market capitalization, and 50 additional companies with exemplary ESG records.

Index Maintenance

The DS 400 Committee maintains the Index at 400 companies at all times, adding a company at the same time that another is removed. Companies may be removed from the DS 400 due to corporate actions, violation of exclusionary screens or poor social or environmental performance.  KLD endeavors to keep turnover on the Index at a rate consistent with turnover on the S&P 500.
