Jantzi Social Index |
Principles |
Modeled on the S&P/TSX 60, the Jantzi Social Index (JSI) consists of 60 Canadian companies that pass a set of broadly-based social and environmental screens. In creating the JSI, Michael Jantzi Research Associates Inc. (MJRA) set out to create a benchmark against which institutional investors could measure the performance of socially screened portfolios. In addition, by tracking the JSI over time, MJRA hoped to answer the question: How does the application of social criteria affect investment performance? Although not perfect, the companies in the JSI reflect a higher standard of social and environmental performance, according to MJRA, as compared to those in the S&P/TSX 60 or S&P/TSX Composite. However, the JSI does not presume to represent the only 60 Canadian companies that meet social and environmental criteria.
