Index Jantzi Social Index

Principles Modeled on the S&P/TSX 60, the Jantzi Social Index (JSI) consists of 60 Canadian companies that pass a set of broadly-based social and environmental screens. In creating the JSI, Michael Jantzi Research Associates Inc. (MJRA) set out to create a benchmark against which institutional investors could measure the performance of socially screened portfolios. In addition, by tracking the JSI over time, MJRA hoped to answer the question: How does the application of social criteria affect investment performance? Although not perfect, the companies in the JSI reflect a higher standard of social and environmental performance, according to MJRA, as compared to those in the S&P/TSX 60 or S&P/TSX Composite. However, the JSI does not presume to represent the only 60 Canadian companies that meet social and environmental criteria.

Excluding criteria The JSI seeks to avoid companies that:

have a consistently poor relationship with aboriginal communities;
undertake questionable or fraudulent business or corporate governance practices;
have a consistently poor employee relations record;
have a consistently poor environmental performance record compared to industry counterparts;
have experienced significant problems at their operations outside of Canada;
manufacture unsafe products, including tobacco and weapons;
have significant involvement in the production of nuclear power.

Positive criteria The JSI seeks to include companies that:

have developed good relationships with the communities in which they ooperate, including aboriginal communities;
encourage diversity in the workplace;
have strong relationships with their employees;
have progressive environmental records;
have superior records of corporate governance.
