NEST has been administering all members pension funds according to ecological and ethical criteria since 1983. INFRAS has been a research and consulting agency with a broad range of issues for 25 years. The jointly developed system for sustainability ratings has been used for years for NEST pension funds. This experience shall be made available to the broader public through the foundation of INrate and the cooperation with the Swiss Raiffeisenbanks.

Research INrate uses a self-contained method to evaluated ecological and ethical sustainability of companies. It is characterized by INrate as follows:

innovative
the most progressive companies are identified across all industries by "best in Service" approach

consistent
the evaluation is comprehensive and end-to-end based on quantifiable information

strict
companies generating parts of their turnover through principally non tolerable activities are excluded via negative-criteria

transparent
Inrating is standardized, comprehensively documented and accountable. Our rating reports are available upon request

independent
the evaluation of the ecological and social performance of a company is conducted completely independent of the financial attractiveness of the corresponding security. This guarantees appropriate and trustworthy decisions.

INrate´s starting point is the question, how a need for maximum environmentally and socially acceptable way of conduct can be satisfied. Products serving the same needs and therefore providing the same service have to face comparison within the same service-sector. This view goes beyond the conventional industry categorisation and supports the structural change, since it compares problematic areas directly with ecological acceptable alternatives.

Criteria Using INrate method the companies are evaluated in three steps
  1. negative criteria
  2. Company-evaluation using positive criteria
  3. Weighting and overall-evaluation
negative criteria:
companies involved in principally non tolerable activities are excluded from further evaluation

Infringing of human rights, child- or forced labour
business ties to tyrannical regimes
nuclear power
armament
"green" and problematic "red" gene technology
Compensation of indigene population, biopiracy
bribery and money laundering
alcohol
tobacco
gambling
pornography

positive criteria:
The products, processes and strategies of a company are evaluated in an end-to-end quantifiable manner. The qualitative information are transferred (graded) into figures by way of a clearly defined grid. Focal criteria are for example the lifecycle consideration of products (from the cradle to the grave), environmental impact of procurement and production, relation to employees, shareholders, suppliers and the public as well as the systematic consideration of ecological and social aspects in management.

Ranking- / Rating-System The weighting and aggregation of the afore mentioned aspects by means of a value benefit analysis leads to an overall-evaluation of the company. It has to be 5% or more above average of the services sector in order to be listed as possible investment (investment-universe).

Quality Management INrate performs the following activities to assure the quality of information accumulation and the evaluation process:

Systematic definition of criteria and grading steps per criteria
Besides publicly accessible information of companies (annual, eco, sustainability reports) additional information and figures are surveyed via a questionnaire directly from the company

Questioning technique to identify conflicting information

Check for problematic activities with relevance to negative criteria through third party sources (media, NGOs, various internet links)

Check and discussion of each rating by the supervisory board

Feedback option for the rated company

permanent supervision of the rated companies for good or problematic events

Invitation of statements from the relevant company in case of serious allegations in regard to negative criteria
